Wire Rod Shot Blasting Machine
Product Description:

Wire Rod Shot Blasting Machine

A wire rod shot blasting machine descales steel wire continuously, in line, before drawing, coating or galvanising. Coiled wire is unwound from a pay-off stand and pulled through a pre-straightener into the blast chamber, where four blast wheels throw steel shot across the full circumference while the wire runs at line speeds up to 120 m/min. Two models cover 6.5–25 mm and 16–36 mm wire. The machine removes mill scale and rust; it is not a shot peening machine, and it does not process straight bar or tube.

How a Wire Rod Shot Blasting Machine Works

Wire path and line speed. The wire is pulled by an external capstan, not pushed, so tension stays constant and the strand cannot buckle inside the chamber. A pre-straightener removes the coil set before entry: wire that still curves runs off-centre, and one side of its circumference passes the blast zone under-treated. Line speed is the variable that sets dwell time — QJM-1 runs to 120 m/min on 6.5–25 mm wire, QJM-2 to 80 m/min on 16–36 mm.

Blasting. Four blast wheels sit around the wire axis so the shot stream wraps the circumference instead of striking one face. Shot size is 0.3–0.8 mm on both models: coarse enough to break mill scale, fine enough that the resulting profile still holds drawing lubricant or accepts a zinc layer.

Abrasive recovery. Spent shot and detached scale fall into a screw conveyor, are lifted by a bucket elevator, and pass an air-wash abrasive separator that rejects broken shot and dust before usable abrasive returns to the storage hopper. Separation quality is what holds consumption down — worn shot that keeps circulating blunts the cleaning rate while doing almost no work.

Purge and extraction. At the exit, an air purge blows residual shot off the wire surface, and a two-stage extraction train (cyclone separator followed by a bag filter dust collector) handles the dust load. Emission limits are set per destination regulation at order, not assumed.

How to choose.

QJM-1 and QJM-2 are not two capacity sizes of one machine; they are two diameter bands with different line speeds. The bands overlap between 16 mm and 25 mm, and inside that window the decision is made on speed, not on size: QJM-1 reaches 120 m/min there, QJM-2 tops out at 80 m/min. A plant that will never run above 25 mm should take QJM-1 and keep the higher speed. A plant running 30 mm coil, or expecting to, takes QJM-2 and accepts the lower line speed on the thinner sizes it processes in between.

Shot size is identical on both models, so surface roughness is set by shot grade rather than by model choice — which means the two machines can be compared on throughput alone.

Where Wire Rod Descaling Pays Back

  • Spring wire and prestressed strand — scale removal before drawing, where a surface defect propagates into a wire break at the die

  • Wire rope and strand — cleaning before stranding and lubrication, so the rope's fatigue life is not set by an oxide layer

  • Welding wire — oxide removal before copper plating, where residual scale shows up directly as poor adhesion

  • Fastener and cold-heading wire — descaling before heading, to protect die life and hold dimensional tolerance

  • Galvanising and coating lines — surface preparation ahead of zinc or aluminium, where the coating bond depends on what sits under it

Surface Quality and Acceptance

The acceptance basis is surface preparation grade Sa 2½ to ISO 8501-1, the same basis used across our other machine ranges. Reaching it on wire depends on four variables that move together: wire diameter, scale thickness, line speed and abrasive flow rate. A heavily scaled 16 mm rod run at 120 m/min will not reach the grade that the same rod reaches at 60 m/min.

Roughness is governed by shot size, not by line speed. With 0.3–0.8 mm shot the profile stays in the band that holds drawing lubricant and accepts a zinc layer; a finer grade buys a smoother surface at the cost of cleaning rate.

Before a grade is quoted, we ask for a wire sample — diameter, steel grade and scale condition — and confirm both the achievable grade and the line speed that delivers it.

Technical Specifications

Q: What is the lead time?

A: Standard lead time is 35–60 days after receipt of order for regular configurations. Non-standard voltage and oversize coil-handling arrangements are scheduled separately. Peak-season capacity, export crate packing and third-party inspection each extend it.

Q: What does the quotation include?

A: The complete-set price covers the blast system (main machine, blast wheels, bucket elevator, abrasive separator, conveying mechanism), the dust collection system with ducting, and the wear parts listed for that model. Ocean freight and insurance, import duties and clearance, and third-party inspection are excluded. Installation and commissioning is quoted separately at USD 135 per man-day. Default trade terms are EXW or FOB Qingdao.

Q:  What are the payment terms?

A: Payment is by T/T: 40% deposit with the order, 60% before shipment. For CIF pricing, freight and insurance are calculated against the destination port and quoted separately.

Q:  What is the warranty, and how fast do you respond?

A: 12 months from the final acceptance certificate, excluding normal wear parts. We recommend stocking two years of wear-prone parts. Any quality issue reported by the buyer receives a written response within 24 hours. The warranty is void where damage results from non-original wear parts or unauthorized modification.

Q:  Can the machine be built for our voltage?

A: Yes, machines are built to the destination voltage and frequency, for example 380 V / 50 Hz or 440 V / 60 Hz. The exact specification and motor selection must be confirmed in writing at order; power ratings may differ between voltage variants.

Q: What is the smallest wire diameter it can handle?

A: 6.5 mm is the lower limit on QJM-1; QJM-2 starts at 16 mm. Wire finer than 6.5 mm falls outside the catalogue range and needs a separate assessment of pay-off and guiding, so it cannot be quoted from this page.

Q:  How fast can it run, and what does the speed depend on?

A: QJM-1 runs to 120 m/min and QJM-2 to 80 m/min, both as line-speed ceilings. The usable speed depends on three things together: wire diameter, scale thickness and target grade. Thicker wire, heavier scale and a higher grade each pull the speed down; the ceiling is not a figure that holds in every condition.

Q:  What surface grade can it reach, and what sets the roughness?

A: The acceptance basis is Sa 2½ to ISO 8501-1, consistent with our other machine ranges. Roughness is set by shot size, and both models use 0.3–0.8 mm, so roughness is tuned by the shot grade rather than by changing model. Whether a given grade is reached depends on the combination of wire diameter, scale thickness, line speed and abrasive flow rate; a wire sample is the reliable way to confirm it before quoting.

Q:  Can it shot peen spring wire?

A: No. This is a descaling machine: it removes mill scale and rust. Shot peening requires controlled Almen arc height, coverage and intensity — a separate process with its own equipment and control scheme, outside this machine's capability.

Q:  Can the same machine also process straight bar or tube?

A: The parameters on this page cover wire rod only. Straight bar and tube sit in a different size band and need different pay-off, guiding and blast wheel arrangement, so this page's diameter and speed figures do not carry over. Send the bar diameter, length and coil or bundle weight and we will size it separately.
