External Pipe Shot Blasting Machine
Product Description:

An external pipe shot blasting machine cleans the outside of steel pipe continuously, in line, before coating or wrapping.

Pipe is carried through the blast chamber on skew rolls that turn it as it advances, while blast wheels throw steel shot across the full circumference. Mill scale, rust and weld spatter come off in a single pass, with no acid bath and no manual grinding.

The QGW range covers outside diameters from φ30 mm to φ2,000 mm across seven models on two platforms; larger diameters are engineered to order. Every model is a surface preparation machine. It descales and cleans the outer wall; it does not shot peen, and it does not touch the bore.

How an External Pipe Shot Blasting Machine Works

Three things happen at the same time.

Conveying and rotation. Pipe is carried on skew rolls. The skew angle turns the pipe as it travels and the roll speed sets the through-feed rate, so every point on the outer wall passes under the blast wheels. Rotation is what makes a two-wheel layout sufficient for a full 360°.

Blasting. Blast wheels mounted at different angles throw steel shot at 60–100 m/s against the outer wall. Because the pipe turns, the bottom of the pipe — the position hand tools and fixed-nozzle systems leave behind as a shadow line — is cleaned to the same standard as the top.

Abrasive circulation. Spent abrasive falls into a screw conveyor, is lifted by a bucket elevator, cleaned in an abrasive separator and returned to the wheels. The separator removes broken shot and dust before reuse, which is what keeps abrasive consumption low in continuous operation. Dust is drawn off to a cartridge dust collector and discharged clean.

What the Machine Buys You

Continuous, not batch. Pipe passes straight through. Throughput is set by roll speed and abrasive flow, not by loading, clamping and unloading cycles.

Uniform circumference. Rotation plus multi-angle wheels removes the shadow line along the underside of the pipe that hand tools and fixed-nozzle systems leave behind.

No pickling. No acid, no rinse water, no spent liquor to treat or dispose of — the environmental argument that most often decides the project in Europe and North America.

Abrasive economy. Closed-loop recovery with separation before reuse; the wear parts that do consume abrasive are the same parts supplied as spares.

Direct line integration. The machine sits upstream of the coating or wrapping station, so cleaned pipe goes to coating without an intermediate handling step and without re-oxidising on the yard.

Predictable maintenance. The wear parts are blast wheel blades, distributors, control cages and conveyor rollers — all consumables with a defined replacement interval, all held in stock for export customers.

Product Description

How to choose. QGW10 to QGW30 share the same abrasive flow, the same power and the same blast layout. They are not five machines of different capacity; they are one machine in five pass-through specifications, and the only question that separates them is your minimum pipe diameter. Below φ50 mm, QGW10 is the only option. Above φ300 mm, the choice is QGW140 or QGW200, where abrasive flow and power step up by a factor of four.

Cleaning speed is 2–10 m/min across all seven models. The exact setting for a given job follows from diameter, wall thickness, incoming scale condition and the required grade, and is fixed at commissioning.

Pipe length, single-piece weight and the permissible unblasted band at each end are agreed per project against the general arrangement drawing. Pipe outside the φ30–2,000 mm catalogue range is engineered to order and quoted individually.

Where External Pipe Blasting Is Used

Line pipe and OCTG. Outer-surface descaling ahead of 3PE, FBE and tape coating, where mill scale left in place is the main cause of coating disbondment.

Water, sewerage and thermal pipelines. Internal and external corrosion protection starts with a clean, profiled outer wall.

Structural and piling tube. Scaffolding, bridge piling and marine structures, where the outer wall must reach the specified grade before painting.

Pressure vessel and tank shells. Shell courses and vessel sections cleaned before wrapping or painting.

Wind power and engineering machinery. Large tubular components prepared for protective coating.

Surface Quality and Acceptance

The standard acceptance grade is Sa 2½ to ISO 8501-1 (commonly written Sa 2.5). Surface roughness — Ra, or anchor profile in coating terminology — is set by the coating system rather than by the machine; 50–100 µm is the range most pipeline coating specifications call for. Both the grade and the roughness figure are written into the technical agreement before the order is placed, and verified at the factory acceptance test.

Technical Specifications

Delivery, Installation and Service

  • Lead time 35–60 days after receipt of order for standard configurations. Oversize chambers and non-standard voltage variants are scheduled separately.

  • Quotation scope the complete set: blast system (main machine, blast wheels, bucket elevator, abrasive separator, conveying), dust collection, and the wear parts configured for that model.

  • Installation not included in the equipment price; quoted at USD 135 per man-day with overseas travel borne by the buyer. Foundation and pit works, unloading and lifting are carried out by the buyer against our drawings.

  • Self-installation supported. Factory acceptance testing is completed before shipment, and remote technical guidance covers parameter setting and trial running.

  • Warranty 12 months from the final acceptance certificate, excluding normal wear parts.

  • Response written reply to any quality issue within 24 hours. A dedicated wear-parts inventory is held for export customers; two years' worth on hand is recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

What pipe diameter can the machine handle?φ30 mm to φ2,000 mm across the QGW range. φ30–300 mm is covered by five 50 kW models; φ152–2,000 mm by QGW140 and QGW200 at 2 × 1,000 kg/min. Pipe outside these limits is a non-standard project and is reviewed by engineering before quotation — we do not quote a diameter we cannot pass.

Can it clean the inside of the pipe as well? No. This machine treats the external surface only. The bore is handled by a different machine type with a different conveying principle, and where both surfaces are in scope the two are normally sized together as a line. Say so at enquiry stage and we will size both at once.

What surface cleanliness can it reach?Sa 2½ to ISO 8501-1, measured against the Rust Grade and Surface Preparation standards. Roughness is specified by your coating system, typically 50–100 µm for pipeline coatings.

How fast does it run?Through-feed speed depends on outside diameter, wall thickness, incoming rust and scale condition, and the grade you require — the same diameter at a different wall thickness runs at a different speed. We therefore quote speed per project rather than publish a single figure, and size the machine on abrasive flow rate, which is the honest basis for comparing capacity between suppliers.

Can it handle short pipe? The machine is built for pipe that passes through as a continuous length. 3–7 m is the practical range. For 500 mm sections we normally recommend blasting full lengths and cutting afterwards: the handling cost and throughput loss of running short pieces individually usually outweighs the saving.

Does it need a pit?Foundation and pit are built to our drawing and carried out by the buyer. Whether pit depth can be reduced is decided per model and per layout, and is confirmed on the general arrangement drawing rather than in advance.

What does the price include, and how long is delivery? The quotation is a complete set covering the blast system, the dust collection system and the model-specific wear parts. Ocean freight, insurance, duties, clearance and third-party inspection are excluded. Installation is quoted separately at USD 135 per man-day. Standard lead time is 35–60 days after receipt of order.

Can it be built for our voltage?Yes — 380 V/50 Hz, 440 V/60 Hz and other combinations. The exact motor selection must be confirmed in writing at order, because power ratings differ between voltage variants.

What about warranty and after-sales response?12 months from the date the final acceptance certificate is signed, excluding normal wear parts. Any quality issue receives a written response within 24 hours. A dedicated wear-parts inventory serves export customers; two years' stock on hand is recommended, and typical consumables are blast wheel blades, distributors, control cages and conveyor rollers.
